► What is an Educational Psychologist?

An Educational Psychologist has undertaken specialist training at postgraduate level and is qualified in understanding the social and emotional needs of children and young adults, as  well as their intellectual development.  Educational Psychologists are also qualified to offer specialist advice regarding behaviours of children in and out of school.

What happens during an assessment?  Once the initial contact has been made by telephone or email an appointment is arranged at the child's home or our office, whichever is more appropriate.  Assessments normally take around two hours and include discussion of results.  Following the assessment a comprehensive report is forwarded to the home address.  This report is the property of the parents or of the the adult if s/he has self-referred, as in the case of a university student.

As part of the assessment the testee works through a series of short tests.  Typically young children, as well as adolescents and adults, respond positively to these and leave the testing situation having enjoyed the whole experience.  Tests that are normally used include the following, with the choice of test depending on the age of the testee:Sean MacBlain

·  Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scales of Intelligence (WPPSI)

·  Wechsler Intelligence Scales for Children (WISC)

·  Wechsler adult Intelligence Scales (WAIS)

·  Wechsler Objective Reading Dimensions

·  Wechsler Objective Numerical Dimensions
